PMMI's latest sustainability report shows widening gaps between CPG goals and current machinery capabilities. See how that affects pneumatic cylinders, valves, fittings, and changeovers.

Industry Update

Packaging and CPG buyers are changing the way they evaluate equipment. PMMI's 2026 report, The Ripple Effect: CPG Sustainability and the New OEM Spec Sheet, says the gap between CPG sustainability ambitions and current machinery capabilities is still widening. The report points to issues such as lightweighting, increased PCR content, and the elimination of secondary packaging.

That is a significant shift for machine builders. A packaging line is no longer judged only by speed. It is also judged by how quickly it can adapt to new materials, different package formats, lighter structures, and changing product protection requirements.

Sustainability Creates Mechanical Pressure

When packaging materials become lighter or more varied, equipment must handle them more carefully. A smaller carton, thinner film, or different closure style can change how a transfer station behaves. Pneumatic systems are often used in exactly these points: lifting, pushing, clamping, holding, rejecting, and positioning.

If the machine has to switch formats frequently, the pneumatic system should support fast changeover. That means standard mounting patterns, easy-to-adjust cylinders, accessible valve manifolds, and clean air routing. It also means minimizing unnecessary complexity so operators can reset the machine quickly.

This is where components such as compact cylinders, guided cylinders, solenoid valves, and push-in fittings become especially important.

OEMs Need Easier Reconfiguration

The sustainability conversation is pushing OEMs to think beyond fixed machine designs. A machine that can only handle one package format may not be good enough if the customer wants to reduce material use or introduce new packaging structures.

Pneumatic hardware helps because it can be modular. A clamp point can be moved. A cylinder stroke can be adjusted. A valve manifold can be reorganized. A vacuum or gripping point can be adapted for a different product size. That makes it easier to support new spec requirements without redesigning the entire machine.

For packaging OEMs, this also improves serviceability. A modular pneumatic layout makes it easier to replace parts, tune the line, and support customer changeovers in the field.

Material Reduction Does Not Reduce Motion Needs

Some buyers assume sustainability automatically means fewer moving parts. In practice, lighter and more efficient packaging can create more delicate handling requirements. A package may need gentler transfer, more accurate positioning, or more careful sealing. That puts more importance on control quality, not less.

Solenoid valves must respond consistently. Air fittings must seal properly. Tubing must fit the layout without pulling on moving points. Air preparation must keep pressure stable so the machine handles reduced-weight packaging without inconsistent behavior.

HOMIPNEU's pneumatic cylinders, solenoid valves, pneumatic fittings, and air source treatment products are relevant to this kind of machine upgrade.

Buying Decisions Are Becoming More Technical

CPG sustainability is also changing the supplier conversation. Buyers want to know whether equipment can support recycled content, reduce waste, adapt to new package forms, and keep production stable through the transition. That means machine and component suppliers must explain how their hardware supports the real process.

For pneumatic products, the practical value is straightforward. Good hardware helps reduce leakage, improve repeatability, shorten changeovers, and support better machine uptime. That matters when a CPG customer is trying to improve both environmental performance and operating efficiency.
